80 x 80cm|Acrylic on Canvas|2022

Bids start from /起拍价:SGD 40,000

The artwork achieves subtle spatial changes through the flow of acrylic paints in different directions. The slight curling at the four corners is filled with conflict, resistance, and restless drama. It alters the traditional way of viewing flat works, transforming it from a conventional painting on canvas to an “object”. The repetitive “flow” represents the practice emphasized in Zen Buddhism, which is a particularly Eastern way of thinking, yet presented in a Western form.

Emi Avora- writeup for ‘Deep in Thought’ and ‘Forest Dance’

In both paintings an amalgamation of personal observations and universal symbols drawn from the everyday and mythology are used to create compositions that touch on the main themes I am currently concerned about: our sense of identity, our environment and how we come across in existing within it, cultural crossroads of east and west, past and present as well as visions of the future. Rather than offering specific narratives, the unorthodox compositions, dreamy use of color and the combination of figuration and abstraction create open propositions for an immersion in spaces for dreaming.

‘Deep in thought’ is based on an image of a boy deeply focused on an activity while surrounded by tropical nature, a large image of a Cycladic Venus statue as well as a form of a monkey in the background. All of those could be read as guardians as well as potential threats. Creating a dreamy world that could potentially be disturbed or put out of balance, I come to ponder on the fragility of motherhood as well as the fragility of our systems and their power to protect us.

In ‘Forest Dance’ I come to utilize the ancient idea of a world where nature, myths and people coexisted in the same space. Nature and particularly the forest were considered spaces inhabited by vegetation, animals, spirits, and people in mutual respect. An encounter of a symbol of Artemis, the ancient Greek Goddess of Nature with a forest hunter does not represent a fight as it might seem but more of a ritual dance. The setting of the tropical forest and the strong light act as a portal for the viewer into these possibilities of co-existence.

169 x 130cm|Oil on Canvas|2022

Bids start from /起拍价:SGD 42,000

This piece was created in the spring of 2022, during a period of extended confinement in the studio, resulting in a low emotional state. In the past, every April, the artist would go to Daxing in southern Beijing to see the pear blossoms. The hundred-year-old pear trees would bloom magnificently, resembling burning fireworks, with the shadows of trees intermingling with the blossoms. While confined at home, memories naturally recalled those scenes and emotions.

The joyful and harmonious state between people, those happy days exuding the fragrance of freedom. Creating this artwork, the artist hopes to bring a bit of warm spring sentiment to themselves and the world in the midst of austerity, believing that spring will always come.

Highly representative, the artist has consistently used a small lamb to express their personal journey of growth and their current social relationships. The artist firmly believes that humanity will usher in an even brighter future. Through life experiences and an understanding of the world, they still possess a warm and clear heart, using their modest light to illuminate both themselves and the world.

Shangming is a rare contemporary monk-artist. Born in Dongshan, Fujian, he entered the monastic life at the age of 12 and has been residing in a temple in Singapore. After nearly 20 years of practicing and serving several senior masters, he developed a keen interest in painting amid worldly affairs. Recognizing his talent and sincerity, his masters assisted him in returning to China in 2011 to study art at the China Academy of Art. He studied under the renowned Professor Chen Ping and continued his studies at the China Academy of Art for several years. Shangming usually goes out under the moonlight on Mount Dongshan, paying respects between Tiantai and Yandang. In addition to his Zen practice, he cultivates his mind through the natural world with a focus on Chinese calligraphy and painting. His paintings are filled with innocence and a rustic charm, embodying a spiritual elevation that distinguishes itself from the academic style of ink wash painting, presenting a unique Zen-like landscape.

Chang Qing  “bird 3”

37 x 48cm|Ink and Color on silk| 2023

Bids start from /起拍价:SGD 80,000

When we look at Chang Qing’s latest series of ink paintings with vibrant color palettes, we can always hear what Xu Jiang calls “the whistling.” All the goldfish, parrots, and tigers in adorable forms are painted with brilliant and bright colors, which breaks the limitation of traditional ink painting materials such as rice paper and brushes. The images are more recognized as the blinking neon lights. There is no moldering, lethargy, or rigid craftsmanship, but only the flowing of exuberance and vigor. They are filled with a sense of futurism and energy from hormones.

Kong Baiji    “Bottle Vase with Fruits”

60 x 45cm |Oil Painting on Paper|2008

Bids start from /起拍价:SGD 200,000

Former director of the National Art Museum of China, Fan Di’an, stated, “Kong Baiji has a unique and distinctive expressive painting style, successfully achieving innovative material techniques. His works exude grandeur within their splendor, possess profound depths and far-reaching realms, characterized by an elegant style and exceptional quality.”

In their co-authored book “China Today and Her Ancient Treasures,” Cohen, former Dean of Harvard Law School and a member of the Nixon administration’s advisory team for the China visit, along with his wife, renowned art critic Joan, specifically highlighted Kong Baiji’s impact on contemporary Chinese painting. They wrote, “Kong Baiji is an outstanding and significant artist who, guided by the influence of murals, stands at the forefront of the new wave in Chinese painting. A Shanghai-born artist, Kong seeks to ‘combine ancient traditions with contemporary sentiments.’ In 1979 and 1989, Mr. Kong traveled to the northwest of China to view Buddhist cave murals in Dunhuang.”

The ancient Dunhuang murals deeply moved Kong Baiji, directly influencing his artistic creations. He meticulously copied images in the caves, later reinterpreting figures of Buddha, bodhisattvas, supplicants, and demons. Using rice paper and oil pastels, he employed the bright colors of Impressionism and the dark contours of Expressionism. His colors often possess an ethereal quality, as if conveying emotions through dreams.

Meng Zhigang   “Subcelestial Touch – 3 Awaiting South Wind”

135 x 90cm| Oil on canvas | 2018

Bids start from /起拍价SGD 36,000

Since the ancient human’s‘Tower of Babel’Project been vetoed by God, although our mankind live on the same planet, we have evolved into interpreting the so-called real world at the moment by applying different languages and wisdom. Thereby, each culture embraces its own spice. I’m trying to use artistic allegory to re-deduce my understanding on eastern wisdom.

In this series, the concept of ‘Subcelestial Dust’ contains profound implication within the cultural context of eastern detached philosophy and implies the dialectical relationship between ‘action’ and ‘inaction’. Image has its pictorial logic, the meaning of which could not be detailed simply by language and words. In my works, those landscapes, plain props or often ‘absent’ motifs actually present the conscious blank in an instant to the viewers in order to motivate the spontaneously peculiar critical thinking skills caused by their sudden halt of thought, and thus let them enjoy a taste of artistic conception on orientalism.

By means of the combination of treeblight and fabric as well as installation of Taihu Lake Stone simulated by plicated paper, I want to construct a Zen world. Moreover, I recently attempt the creation method of uncommonly depicting the ordinary things. The beauty of wrinkled paper is a metaphor for the texture of hillstone and the uncanny workmanship of nature, while treeblight and white gauze refer to the ordinary world, just like a piece of ‘subcelestial  dust’poetry written by way of painting.

(This piece is the flagship work of the artist in this series and was once used as the exclusive artwork for the solo exhibition poster. It was specially donated in collaboration with a collecting institution at the invitation of a charity forum.)
