The artwork achieves subtle spatial changes through the flow of acrylic paints in different directions. The slight curling at the four corners is filled with conflict, resistance, and restless drama. It alters the traditional way of viewing flat works, transforming it from a conventional painting on canvas to an “object”. The repetitive “flow” represents the practice emphasized in Zen Buddhism, which is a particularly Eastern way of thinking, yet presented in a Western form.

Emi Avora- writeup for ‘Deep in Thought’ and ‘Forest Dance’
In both paintings an amalgamation of personal observations and universal symbols drawn from the everyday and mythology are used to create compositions that touch on the main themes I am currently concerned about: our sense of identity, our environment and how we come across in existing within it, cultural crossroads of east and west, past and present as well as visions of the future. Rather than offering specific narratives, the unorthodox compositions, dreamy use of color and the combination of figuration and abstraction create open propositions for an immersion in spaces for dreaming.
‘Deep in thought’ is based on an image of a boy deeply focused on an activity while surrounded by tropical nature, a large image of a Cycladic Venus statue as well as a form of a monkey in the background. All of those could be read as guardians as well as potential threats. Creating a dreamy world that could potentially be disturbed or put out of balance, I come to ponder on the fragility of motherhood as well as the fragility of our systems and their power to protect us.
In ‘Forest Dance’ I come to utilize the ancient idea of a world where nature, myths and people coexisted in the same space. Nature and particularly the forest were considered spaces inhabited by vegetation, animals, spirits, and people in mutual respect. An encounter of a symbol of Artemis, the ancient Greek Goddess of Nature with a forest hunter does not represent a fight as it might seem but more of a ritual dance. The setting of the tropical forest and the strong light act as a portal for the viewer into these possibilities of co-existence.
