Tiger’s Nest Expedition

22 May 2026

The most anticipated day of the retreat. A pre-dawn departure from Thimphu to Paro, followed by the legendary hike to Taktshang Monastery — the Tiger’s Nest — perched at 3,120 metres on a sheer cliff face above the Paro valley. This is both a physical challenge and a deeply spiritual experience, tracing the path that Guru Rinpoche is said to have flown on the back of a tigress in the 8th century.

06:00: Depart Thimphu for Paro

Early morning departure from Zhiwaling Ascent Hotel. The drive to Paro takes approximately one hour, winding through the valley as the sun rises over the mountains. Light breakfast boxes were provided for the journey.

07:15: Arrive at Tiger’s Nest Trailhead

Arrive at the base of the Taktshang trail. A brief orientation from the guide covering the route, pace, and what to expect. The hike ascends approximately 900 metres over rocky, forested terrain — sturdy shoes and layered clothing recommended. Horses are available for the first section for those who prefer.

08:00: Hike to Taktshang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest)

The ascent takes roughly 2–3 hours through blue pine forest, passing prayer flags, small shrines, and increasingly dramatic views of the monastery clinging to the cliff face. The trail climbs steadily, with a rest point at the cafeteria midway offering tea and panoramic views across the valley.

About Taktshang Monastery

Taktshang Palphug Monastery, known as Tiger’s Nest, is Bhutan’s most iconic landmark and one of the holiest sites in the Himalayan Buddhist world. Built in 1692 around the cave where Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) is said to have meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, three days, and three hours in the 8th century. The temple complex clings to a cliff face 900 metres above the Paro valley floor at an elevation of 3,120 metres.

11:00: Arrive at the Monastery

Reach Taktshang Monastery and explore the temple complex. The interior houses several chapels and shrines, including the sacred cave of Guru Rinpoche. A moment for quiet reflection in one of the most extraordinary settings on earth — the valley stretching out far below, prayer flags fluttering in the mountain wind.

12:00: Descent & Lunch

Begin the descent back down the trail (approximately 1.5–2 hours). Lunch at the Taktshang Cafeteria midway, with views of the monastery from across the gorge — one of the most photographed perspectives in Bhutan.

15:00: Free Time in Paro Town

The afternoon is free to explore Paro at your own pace. Browse the local shops for traditional textiles, handcrafted goods, and souvenirs. Visit the Paro Rinpung Dzong if energy permits, or simply rest and reflect on the day’s experience.

📍Paro Town

19:00: Farewell Dinner

A final group dinner in Paro — celebrating the retreat, sharing stories from the hike, and reflecting on the week’s experiences together. An evening of warmth and connection before tomorrow’s departures.
